Tokyo Meisei Japanese Language Academy (東京明生日本語学院) opened in April 2017 in Ryogoku (Sumida ward), 9 minutes on foot from Ryogoku Station (JR Sobu Line and Oedo subway line). Ryogoku is the centre of sumo and traditional culture in Tokyo: the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena and the Edo-Tokyo Museum are close by, and Akihabara is a few minutes away by train.
The school was founded by the educational corporation Asahi Gakuen (学校法人朝日学園), which has taught Japanese to international students for more than 25 years. The group includes 日本国際工科専門学校 in Matsudo, an aviation college in Narita and a social welfare college in Funabashi. Tokyo Meisei graduates can continue at the group’s colleges and also go on to universities and colleges in Tokyo.
The main programs are preparatory courses for higher education: 2 years (April or October start, from A1 to C1), 1 year 9 months (July) and 1 year 6 months (October, from A1 to B2). Classes run 5 days a week, in a morning shift from 9:00 to 12:30 or an afternoon shift from 13:30 to 17:00, 4 lessons a day. The school picks students up at the airport and helps with registration, insurance, a bank account, doctor visits and part-time work.

I have 11 years of school. Can I apply?
The school’s website does not state a minimum number of years of education, but a Japanese student visa usually needs 12 years. With 11 years you will most often need extra proof of education, such as a college diploma or a certificate of university study. It is best to check your case with us before you apply.

Can I work while studying?
Yes, once you have permission: up to 28 hours a week, and up to 8 hours a day in school holidays. The school’s student support officer finds part-time jobs that match your level of Japanese and helps you practise interviews.
