Who short courses are for

Choose short-term if you…

  • stay up to 3 months
  • want to try school and life in Japan first
  • learn Japanese for travel, work or yourself
  • want to start quickly, with few documents

Long-term may suit you better if you…

  • plan to stay 6 months or more
  • want to enter a university or college in Japan
  • need to work part-time while you study

Visa and entry

No student visa needed

Short courses are taken on a temporary visitor stay (短期滞在), which allows attending short courses for up to 90 days.

Citizens of 74 countries and regions can enter Japan without a visa — for most of them for 90 days (15 days for Indonesia and Thailand, 30 days for Brunei and Qatar). Everyone else applies for a short-term visa at a Japanese embassy or consulate; your school can send the documents you need.

Good to know

  • No sponsor documents like for the student visa
  • Part-time work is only allowed on a student visa
  • To continue long-term, you apply for a student visa separately — usually from your home country
  • No residence registration needed for a short stay
