Student visa for Japan
The Student status (留学) lets you study full-time at a Japanese language school, a vocational college or a university. Here is how it works for language-school students: the steps, the Japanese level, money, the official forms and life on the visa.

The basics
What the student visa is
Two things work together. The status of residence (在留資格) is what allows you to live in Japan as a student. The visa is the entry stamp a Japanese embassy puts in your passport so that you can arrive and receive that status.
Step by step
How to get a student visa for a language school
For a language school the school usually files the immigration application for you. The whole process takes about 6–8 months from choosing a school to your first class.
Typical dates for all four intakes (April, July, October, January) are on the long-term program page.
Japanese level
How much Japanese you need
Language-school students need Japanese at level A1 — the level of JLPT N5. From the October 2026 intake (and for changes and extensions filed from 1 July 2026) it must be proven with a test or a school interview.
Money and sponsor
Showing you can pay for school and life in Japan
Immigration needs to see that tuition and living costs are covered by savings, a sponsor or a scholarship — not by part-time work.
Forms and documents
Official forms and the documents you need
Choose your situation and your school’s class: the buttons open the current forms on the ISA website, and the list shows what to prepare. Your school confirms the final list.
Class I: A school rated Class I by immigration (適正校). The fewest documents: for the CoE no proof of your sponsor’s funds is needed. Your school knows its class.
Class II: A school rated Class II (適正校). If your nationality is on ISA’s list (別表 — for example the US, Canada, the UK, EU countries, Australia, Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Brazil, Mexico), no proof of funds is needed for the CoE. Nationals of other countries — for example India, Vietnam, Nepal, the Philippines, Indonesia — add the sponsor form, a bank balance certificate, a year of account history and proof of relationship.
No class: A school without 適正校 status. The full set: also the sponsor’s employment certificate, proof of income and your last diploma.
Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) — you are abroad and enrolling at a language school
For a language school the school usually files the CoE application: a staff member takes your file to the immigration bureau. You collect the documents, the school checks and files them. Under ISA rules you can also file yourself if you are in Japan, or through an administrative scrivener (行政書士). With the CoE you apply for the visa at a Japanese embassy, consulate or visa center and enter Japan within 3 months.

These lists are for language schools (日本語教育機関). Universities, vocational colleges (専門学校) and other schools use their own ISA checklists.
