Change of status of residence in Japan
Finishing language school, college or university and staying to work? Here is how to change from the Student status to a work status (在留資格変更) without losing your right to stay — the timing, the documents and the official forms. Other changes, such as marriage or starting a business, follow the same procedure.

When it is needed
When you need a change of status
Your status of residence is tied to what you do in Japan. When that changes, you apply for a change of status (在留資格変更).
The main case
From Student to a work status, step by step
The key rule: apply before your student status expires. You may start working under the new status only after approval.
Which work status
Choosing the work status
It depends on your education, the field of work and your Japanese.
No offer yet
Graduating without a job?
If your student status is ending and you have no offer, you can change to Designated Activities (特定活動) for job hunting: 6 months plus one extension, up to 1 year, with a recommendation from your school. It is for graduates of Japanese universities and of vocational colleges (専門学校) with the 専門士 title. A language-school graduate qualifies only with a bachelor’s degree from a university abroad and a school that meets ISA’s conditions. Details: job-hunting visa after graduation.

Forms and documents
What is the same for every status
Besides the form and documents of your new status, the ISA procedure page has two common files: the fee payment form and a template statement of reasons for when a relative files for you.
Change of status — what is the same for every status
The applicant files in Japan, before the current period of stay ends. Instead, a legal representative, a staff member of the employer or school approved by the immigration bureau, an attorney or an administrative scrivener (行政書士) can file; if the applicant is under 16 or ill, a relative or a person living with them. The application form and the other documents depend on the new status — choose it in the ISA forms block above.

- Passport and residence card — to show パスポート及び在留カード(提示)
- Health insurance — to show 健康保険証等(提示)Instead of the old insurance card you can show the 資格情報 screen in Mynaportal (マイナポータル), the 資格情報のお知らせ notice or a 資格確認書. If you have nothing to show, the change of status is not refused for that reason.
- Fee payment form — needed after approval 手数料納付書At the bureau you stick revenue stamps (収入印紙) for the fee on it when you collect your new residence card.form · PDFform · Excel
- Statement of reasons — if the applicant is ill and cannot come 理由書Needed when a relative or a person living with the applicant files because the applicant is ill or cannot come for another good reason; add a doctor’s certificate. Being busy at work or school does not count. For a child under 16 the relative also needs proof of relationship, for example a certificate of residence (住民票).template · Word
